Rocky beach, slippery pool tiles… enter the water shoes

I picked up these WateLves kids swim water shoes in Liuli Purple for my kid mainly for a beach holiday and some regular pool sessions. Nothing fancy in mind: I just wanted something to stop burnt feet on hot tiles, avoid slipping near the pool, and protect from rocks and random sharp bits in the sand. I’m not into branded kids stuff; if it works and doesn’t fall apart in a week, I’m happy.

We used them for about a week straight on holiday (beach, hotel pool, water park), then a few weekends at the local swimming pool. So they’ve seen hot sand, rocky shore, wet tiles and shallow kids’ pool. I didn’t baby them: quick rinse here and there, sometimes just left them to dry in the sun, sometimes thrown in the washing machine as suggested.

My first impression when I took them out of the bag: they feel more like thick socks with a rubbery sole than “real shoes”. Super light, very flexible, easy for a child to bend and twist. At first I thought they’d be too flimsy, especially for rocky beaches, but in practice they hold up better than they look. Still, you need to know what you’re buying: these are aqua socks, not hiking sandals.

Overall, they do what they’re supposed to do: protect small feet in and around water without being heavy or annoying to wear. They’re not perfect, and there are a couple of things that bug me, but for the price and for how often kids outgrow shoes, they’re pretty solid. I’d say they’re good for holidays and casual use, not something I’d rely on as an everyday outdoor shoe.

Value: cheap enough, and they actually do the job

★★★★★ ★★★★★

For what they cost, I’d say these WateLves water shoes offer good value for money. You’re not paying for a big sports brand logo, just for something that protects kids’ feet in and around water. The key point for me is that they genuinely make holidays and pool days easier: no more burnt feet on tiles, less slipping, and less complaining on rocky beaches. For a product that’s used intensely for a short period (like a week’s holiday), that’s already worth the price.

Compared to more expensive kids’ water sandals from big brands, you obviously lose some things: thicker sole, more structure, sometimes better long-term durability. But you also pay two to three times less here. If your main use is beach, pool, water park, and the occasional garden play with a hose, I don’t really see the point in spending a lot more. These are light, comfortable, and do the basic job without feeling cheap in the wrong way.

The fact that they’re machine washable adds to the value. Instead of throwing them away when they start to smell a bit or look dirty, you just toss them in the wash and they come out cleaner and usable again. The removable insole is another detail that usually only shows up on slightly pricier options, and it genuinely helps with drying and hygiene.

On the downside, if you’re looking for one pair of shoes that covers everything – playground, everyday walking, and water – this isn’t it. You’ll still need normal trainers or sandals. But if you see these as a dedicated water accessory, like swim goggles or armbands, the price feels fair. I’d happily buy another pair in the next size up when my kid grows out of these, which is probably the best sign that the value is there.

Design: more sock than shoe, in a good way (mostly)

★★★★★ ★★★★★

The design is clearly focused on being easy to wear and safe around water. The upper is a one-piece, high-stretch synthetic fabric that behaves like a thick sock. That means it’s very easy for kids to put on themselves after a couple of tries, which is a big plus. No stiff heel counter, no hard edges that rub the ankle. My kid could pull them on and off without help after the second day, which saves time and arguments when you’re heading to the pool.

At the front, there’s a thickened toe area for anti-collision. In real life, this means when they kick rocks or bump into the pool steps, they don’t immediately complain about pain. It’s not as protective as a rigid closed-toe sandal, but for small stones and pool edges, it’s enough. I’ve seen my kid run over rocky patches and accidentally kick a rock; they notice it, but it doesn’t hurt like being barefoot.

The sole has a non-slip pattern that grips decently on wet tiles and around the pool. It’s not magic: on very smooth, super-wet tiles, they can still slip if they sprint and don’t pay attention. But compared to bare feet, the risk goes down a lot. On rougher surfaces like concrete around the pool or wet rocks, the grip is pretty solid. A couple of Amazon reviews mention they’re still a bit slippy in the pool itself, and I’d agree: inside the water on very smooth floors, you still need to keep an eye on them.

Style-wise, it’s kid-focused: bright colours and cartoon-style patterns, not something discreet. If you want something more neutral, there are other colours in the range, but this specific Liuli Purple is clearly made to be fun. Personally, I don’t really care as long as my kid keeps them on, and this design helped with that. The only downside is that because they look so sock-like, some adults might underestimate how much they actually protect. You just need to remember these are for water and light use, not playground abuse.

Comfort: like wearing socks, which kids usually accept

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Comfort is probably the strongest point here. Because the shoes are so light and flexible, kids forget they’re wearing them after a few minutes. My kid is usually quite picky with shoes and often complains about “scratchy” seams or stiff heels. With these, there was no drama at all. They slide on easily, the fabric hugs the foot, and there’s no obvious rubbing point. The round toe and stretchy upper give enough room for toes to move, even if you size up a bit.

On hot sand and tiles, the shoes make a real difference. Before, my kid would run a few steps and then hop around complaining about burning feet. With these on, they just walk normally. You still feel some warmth through the thin sole, but it’s mild, not painful. Same thing for rocky beaches: you can still sense the shape of the rocks, but the sole and toe protection stop the sharp pain. My kid was able to walk over pebbles and small rocks without tiptoeing or asking to be carried.

Inside the pool and in shallow water, they stay on the foot well. The stretchy upper acts almost like a sock cuff, so they don’t slip off when kicking or running in the water. No sand or small stones got trapped inside during our use, which is a big plus, because that’s usually what causes irritation. The breathable material and the moisture-wicking claim are mostly true: the feet weren’t wrinkly and white after long use, and no complaints about “wet and cold” feet once out of the water, as long as we took them off within a reasonable time.

Only minor downside: cushioning is minimal. If your kid is used to very padded trainers, this will feel thin and flat. For water and beach use, I prefer it this way because it dries faster and feels more natural, but it’s something to know. I wouldn’t use these all day on hard pavements; they’re clearly made for water and soft ground, not for city walks.

Materials: light, synthetic, and clearly built for water use

★★★★★ ★★★★★

The shoes are mostly synthetic: synthetic upper, EVA sole, rubber insole, and rubbery lining. Nothing fancy, but it makes sense for something that’s constantly wet. The upper fabric is thin but dense, with a high-stretch feel. When you pinch it, you can feel it has some thickness, not just a cheap mesh. It dries relatively fast once out of the water, especially if you pull the insole out and leave them in the shade. In the sun, mine were dry in under an hour after a pool session.

The outsole is made from Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), which is a lightweight foam-like material. It’s flexible and soft underfoot, but obviously not as tough as a thick rubber hiking sole. For beach, pool, and casual water park use, it’s fine. I walked in them myself a bit (I squeezed into my kid’s size just to test the feel), and the ground feel is very direct. You still notice bigger rocks, but they don’t dig into the foot. For kids, that’s usually enough protection.

The insole is rubber-based and removable, which I like. After a day in the water, you can just pull it out, rinse both shoe and insole, and leave them to dry separately. It helps avoid that permanent damp smell. The lining is also synthetic and smooth, so it doesn’t chafe the skin. My kid didn’t get any blisters or red marks, even after wearing them for several hours straight at the water park.

On the downside, because everything is synthetic and pretty thin, I don’t expect these to last for years. They’re more "one or maybe two seasons" shoes, which is kind of fine given how fast kids’ feet grow. If your child drags their feet on rough concrete all day, I can see the sole wearing down quicker. For the price, the material choice is reasonable: light, quick-drying, and easy to clean, but not built like a tank.

Durability: fine for a season or two, not built like a tank

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Durability on kids’ water shoes is always a bit relative, because feet grow so fast. From what I’ve seen over several weeks of use, plus considering the large number of Amazon reviews, I’d say these are decently durable for the price, but you shouldn’t expect them to last forever. The stitching between the upper and the sole has held up well so far, no fraying or separation, even after multiple soak-dry cycles and a couple of machine washes.

The sole shows slight wear on the areas where my kid drags their feet, especially on rough poolside concrete. It’s not dramatic, but after a week of heavy daily use, you can see that the outer texture is a bit smoother in those spots. For a holiday or one summer of regular use, that’s acceptable. If you plan to use them as the main shoe for playgrounds and hard surfaces, they’ll probably wear down faster than normal trainers or closed sandals.

The upper fabric has handled stretching and tugging pretty well. My kid yanks them off by pulling on the heel, and so far there’s no tearing. The print hasn’t peeled or faded much, even with sun exposure and salt water. I was a bit worried about the removable insole curling or deforming after washing, but it stayed flat and still fits properly inside the shoe. That’s often where cheaper water shoes start to annoy me, with insoles that bunch up under the foot.

In short, I see these as seasonal gear: good enough to survive a full holiday and then weekend use, probably fine for a second season if your kid’s foot doesn’t grow too fast, but not something you hand down three times. Considering the low price and the fact that kids often outgrow them before they actually break, I’m okay with that trade-off. Just don’t expect heavy-duty sandal-level toughness.

Performance: good grip and protection, with a few limits

★★★★★ ★★★★★

In terms of performance, I mainly looked at three things: grip, protection, and drying time. On grip, they do a decent job. Around the pool on slightly textured tiles, my kid could run and play without sliding all over the place. Compared to bare feet, I noticed fewer "almost falls". On very smooth, polished tiles with a thin layer of water, they can still slip if they sprint or twist suddenly. So they reduce the risk, but they don’t erase it. On wet rocks and in shallow sea water, the grip was better than I expected for such a thin sole.

For protection, they’re clearly better than nothing, but not bulletproof. On the rocky beach we used, they handled small stones, shells, and rough concrete without any problem. The toe reinforcement helped when my kid kicked a rock or bumped into steps. You still feel the contact, but it’s more of a "tap" than a painful hit. I wouldn’t trust them for sea urchins or very sharp coral, but for typical European beaches and pools, they’re fine. One Amazon reviewer mentioned they’re “still a little slippy in pool” but great for hot sand, which matches what I saw.

Drying time is pretty good. After rinsing them and leaving them in the shade with the insole out, they were dry by the next outing, even with only a few hours in between. In hot weather with sun, they dry even quicker. The removable insole helps here; without it, I think they’d stay damp longer inside. Odour-wise, after a week of heavy use, they didn’t smell terrible. A quick machine wash (as allowed in the instructions) freshened them up without deforming anything.

Overall, performance is solid for the intended use:

  • Good grip on most wet surfaces, but still some risk on very smooth tiles
  • Enough protection for hot sand, pebbles, and pool edges
  • Fast drying and easy cleaning
They’re not made for intense sports or daily street wear, but as water shoes for holidays and weekend pool trips, they get the job done without fuss.

What you actually get when you order these

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Out of the package, you get one pair of water shoes, nothing else. No fancy box, just basic packaging, which honestly is fine for this type of product. The model I got is the Liuli Purple, which in real life looks like a colourful, slightly cartoonish pattern that kids usually like. It’s unisex, so it works for both boys and girls without any issue. The style is more on the fun side than the boring plain colours, which helped convince my kid to actually keep them on.

They’re basically like a sock upper made from a stretchy synthetic fabric, attached to a thin EVA sole with a rubbery feel. There’s a removable insole inside, also rubber-based, which you can pull out to wash or dry faster. The shoes have a pull-on design, and some versions have a bit of adjustability, but in practice you mostly just slip them on and off. No laces, no complicated straps, which is good when you’re trying to get a wriggly toddler ready for the pool.

Size-wise, they tend to run fairly true to size, but I followed what a lot of people do and sized up half to one size for growth and comfort. That worked well, because the fabric is stretchy and hugs the foot without being tight. If you’re between two sizes, I’d go up, especially if you want them to last more than one season. The platform height is basically flat, around 1 cm, so you’re very close to the ground, which kids usually prefer in water.

Overall, the presentation is simple and practical. Nothing premium, but nothing dodgy either. You get light, flexible water shoes that look kid-friendly and are ready to use right away. For the price point and for something that’ll probably be outgrown in a year, that’s fine by me.

Pros

  • Very light and comfortable, kids forget they’re wearing them
  • Good protection against hot sand, small rocks, and rough pool surfaces
  • Quick-drying, machine washable, and removable insole helps with hygiene

Cons

  • Grip is still limited on very smooth, wet tiles
  • Thin sole and materials mean they’re more seasonal than long-term
  • Not suitable as an all-day, everyday shoe on hard pavements

Conclusion

These WateLves kids swim water shoes are simple, light, and do what they’re supposed to do: protect small feet from hot sand, rough ground, and slippery pool edges without being annoying to wear. They’re more like thick socks with a grippy sole than real shoes, which is actually a plus for comfort. My kid accepted them straight away, no complaints about rubbing or tightness, and they stayed on in the water without issues.

They’re not perfect: the grip on very smooth, wet pool tiles isn’t magic, and the thin sole means they’re not made for long walks on hard pavements. Durability is fine for a season or two, but I wouldn’t expect them to survive years of heavy abuse. Still, for the price, the combination of comfort, quick drying, and decent protection makes them a solid choice for holidays, swimming lessons, and water parks.

If you want tough, structured sandals that can handle daily outdoor play and long walks, look elsewhere and be ready to pay more. If you just need affordable water shoes that get the job done at the beach and pool, these are a good, low-stress option. I’d recommend them to parents who want something practical and cheap that actually works, and I’d buy the next size up when needed.
